Our History
The Asebu Kingdom
Situated along the Gulf of Guinea about 15 minutes from Cape Coast, the Asebu Kingdom was founded around AD 1205 by two brothers, Asebu Amenfi and Kwegya Amenfi — descendants of a great Egyptian general whose journey across the Sahara and the seas eventually brought their people to the coast of present-day Ghana.
In 1612, the chiefs of Asebu signed the historic Treaty of Asebu with the Dutch Republic — the first treaty between the Dutch and the peoples of the Gold Coast — leading to the construction of Fort Nassau at Moree, today a UNESCO World Heritage site.
